VGM

Also called: Verified gross mass

The declared total weight of a packed container, required under the SOLAS convention before it can be loaded on a ship.

Since 2016, shippers must declare a verified gross mass for every packed export container, either by weighing the whole container or by weighing its contents and adding the tare. The IMO describes it as a condition for loading, supplied in time for the stowage plan.

Lines set a VGM cut-off for each sailing.

Where it goes wrong

A weight corrected on one document but not filed as a new VGM leaves the declaration and the bill of lading disagreeing.

What Spurby does

Compares the VGM with the packing list and the draft bill of lading, and flags the stale figure.
