Draft bill of lading

Also called: Draft B/L

The proposed bill of lading a carrier or forwarder sends for checking before the final, original bill is issued.

The bill of lading is the receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage and often a document of title. The draft lets the shipper check parties, cargo description, quantities, weights and marks against the invoice, packing list and any letter of credit before it is issued.

Corrections after issue cost time and amendment fees.

Where it goes wrong

When a corrected invoice goes to the forwarder only, the draft bill picks up the old counts and weights.

What Spurby does

Compares the invoice, packing list, shipping instructions and draft bill, and names the stale copy and who sent the newer one.
