RFI
Also called: Request for information
A formal question from a contractor to the design team, asking for clarification of drawings or specifications before work goes ahead.
RFIs are raised when drawings conflict, information is missing or a site condition differs from the design. They are logged, sent to the architect or consultant and answered in writing, and the answer may change a detail or a drawing.
A study of 1,362 projects by the Navigant Construction Forum (2013) found a median of 9.7 days to answer one.
Where it goes wrong
Answers given on site visits or as WhatsApp sketches never reach the RFI log or the drawings, so another crew builds to the original detail.
What Spurby does
Matches informal answers to the open RFI, tells every crew the answer affects, and asks the consultant to close it on the log.
