First article inspection (FAI)

Also called: FAI

A full inspection of the first part from a new or changed production process, checking every characteristic against the drawing.

The first article is measured feature by feature against the current drawing revision, and the results are recorded in an FAI report. It verifies that the tooling, process and documentation can produce a conforming part.

It is repeated after significant design or process changes.

Where it goes wrong

When a tool is changed before the drawing is revised, the first article can be measured to the old revision and pass.

What Spurby does

Checks that each report was measured to the current revision, and flags one that wasn’t.
