Free time

The number of days a container can stay at the terminal or in use before demurrage or detention begins.

Free time is set by the line’s tariff or negotiated in the contract, and may be counted separately for demurrage and detention or combined. It often starts at discharge from the vessel and ends at gate-out or at the return of the empty container.

Customs holds and late documents use it up.

Where it goes wrong

Different parties quote different free days, and the one in the booking confirmation is the one that counts.

What Spurby does

Records free time from its source and counts it down for each container.
